These two locations were established by the earlier settlers of the area, who relocated to northern Michigan after the Civil War. One man was poor farmer, the other a wealthy lumberman. They would later become influential in shaping the towns near them after being elected for public office, but both of them would eventually see their legacies lost.

The area is still farmed prosperously, but the activity and business within the towns have since declined only after a few generations.

Rosewell Ruins Gloucester County, Virginia

Last year, I found out about this place while reading a "Ghosts of Virginia" book, which included one black and white picture of the ruins along with a brief history of the house. I was instantly fascinated, as I had never heard of it before and it's all of my loves in one spot; ruins, old houses, colonial architecture and Virginia history.
On July 10th, I packed up the family and made the hour drive to visit, and here's what we saw!

Recently located this abandoned gas station somewhere along interstate 20. Can't remember if it was in Alabama or Mississippi, so it's a mystery! Perhaps someone else can dispel it...
Sorry for the poor quality of the first picture.

On the way to a picnic with my wife's coworkers yesterday one of the landmarks in our directions was a "roofless church." Luckily I had grabbed my wife's point and shoot camera before we left home so I was able to stop and snap a few photos on our way back. I looked up the church online and found a history of it and additional photos on the King William County Historical Society's website: http://www.kingwilliamhistory.org/acquinton_church/index.html According to that there are apparently other ruins behind and across the street from the church. I didn't see them but I wasn't really looking either. If we ever go back out there I'll be sure to stop and take photos of those too.
 Outside of the church.

I've been thinking for a while that maybe I should have more than one Dress of Awesome, since I'm always wearing the Chinese Dress of Awesome whenever I have a formal event (the exception being the Masquerade Ball at the HRSFA House Party this 4th of July, where I wore my new dress from Nordstrom's which is awesome but not Awesome) and although it does win everything on a pretty consistent basis, I feel like people could get tired of it. And sometimes it needs to be dry cleaned and I need to wear something else in the meantime.
So I was browsing Etsy tonight, and saw a dress that I had seen before, which is this really pretty medieval style gown which is on sale this weekend:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27627311
There is also the very similar dress, only with short sleeves:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=19192723
So the questions are:
1) Do I go ahead and get the impulse buy (which is less impulsive when you put it in the context of having wanted another Dress of Awesome for quite some time, now)? I can afford it, despite the current state of unemployment, and for a custom made gown it's a pretty good price. And so pretty!
If yes, then there's also:
2) Long sleeves or short?
3) Color? http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.79360772.jpg
I'm leaning towards hunter green or burgundy, since green is my favorite color/I look good in green, but the burgundy is also very pretty and I don't currently own a dress in that color. Other colors might be royal blue, purple, or maybe even black. Or anything. Probably not pink, yellow, olive, pale olive, white, tan, or cream. I guess that narrows it down a bit.
Comments with your thoughts would be appreciated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update: I ended up getting the long sleeved dress, in burgundy, and it will be hemmed in both the skirt and the sleeves. I figure that if it isn't perfect, $50 is not that much in the scheme of things, and I think it will be nice to wear to HRSFA costume-y things. Though not so much a replacement of the Chinese Dress of Awesome for wearing to formal things.
I might knit a bodice to go with the dress, probably in black. I may have to go get yarn for that, though perhaps I have stash that would work. |

"Seymour Butts"
He was tall and lanky. He had the feel of a distinguished older gentleman. His white hair, his bike, his tanned and well maintained body all spoke of money, a lot of money. He was in good shape, and he zoomed passed me on the bike-path. He was well on his way to disappear into the horizon ahead - but, alas, not fast enough. His white shirt and shorts shone bright in the afternoon sun, and his butt, clearly visible through the stretched material of his pants, flapped frantically, in careless harmony to the rhythm of his pedaling. Why no underwear? - I wanted to know, though I never asked.

It was nice to see you happy. I wanted to say hello. Then I remembered, " NO WAY!" and " I am pushing you away." and all the words left me. Futility.

Not a very big ruin but I thought some one may have an idea what these are. There are three of these running beside a local river, the Sirhowy, about 5 yards apart, only these three are visible, The other two are under the cut ( Read more... )

The Booby Man
It must have been around 6:30 AM when I stopped somewhere nearby the Steel Bridge to drink some water. The people living on the street were just getting up, stretching and folding up their blankets. A bearded man sitting on the steps seemed to have been awake for a while, his shopping cart was all packed up, ready to roll. He waved so I waved back. As I fiddled with my backpack he got my attention again, and before I could protest or even look away he lifted up his shirt. He was wearing an awesomely fitting black bra. I was mesmerized. It was as if he went to one of those department store events where some underwear expert demonstrates how to find the best fitting bra. That the bra he wore fit his breasts perfectly I knew because with his left hand he cupped his left breast and jiggled it a bit. So - what else could I do - I said: ' That is very nice.' He smiled proudly as he let his shirt down and I went back to fiddling with my backpack. But then, suddenly he got up and started towards me with a friendly expression on his face that said: 'you should see this.' I loudly protested: ' Thank you, but I have seen enough." - before he could do anything else. Obediently, he stopped, shrugged his shoulders and sat back down.
As a backdrop to the already surreal, a strawberry-blond woman, in gray sweat-pants, a tank top and no underware, bared her badly bruised bottom as she squatted down on the sidewalk to pee. She was done quickly, yanked up her pants and went to sit by her friends. They must have just gotten up.
Then I managed to slip the water-bottle into a side-pocket and I rode off to the Max station. It was a lovely morning. Really.

a lifestyle change of sorts.
I was not made for sedentary lifestyle. I need to move. And if physical exertion is part of my daily life then all the better. So I am commuting to Clark College now. By bike, Max and the bus. And I grin when I think about it. I even grin at 5: 45 AM as I get on my bike - I can't help it. And I grin when I realize that my back is all right - in spite of the physical therapist's prognosis. It has been 10 miles of biking each way - that is 20 miles a day. Plenty of miles for me.
My speed is getting better, from 11 mph it went up to 12 mph as I switched tires, from the thick mountain bike one to a nice skinny one. Now the ride is more whoosh less whirl-bump-sigh.
This first week the physical exhaustion got to me - I stumbled my way through the past few days, literally (I have the bruises and oil stains on me to prove it) and figuratively . Sleeping became falling into a black hole - I cannot recollect any of it once I awake.
I sure hope I find a way to keep at it, even after summer term is over.

I have to go to Dubuque, IA a lot as one of my employees works in our office there. On the way back down to Illinois I pass through the village of Maquoketa, IA. This house is a little past the village going South. It sits right beside an apparently still-active drive-in theater. I first saw it last Winter but it was way too cold and windy to explore it then. Turns out that may have been a better time. In March I was able to finally stop and shoot it. The first thing I noticed was the grass was all matted down in the front yard. At first I thought maybe it was due to high winds as the area around is unprotected prairie. As soon as I stepped one foot in the yard, I found out it was from water....lots of water. I sank up to my knee in cold and slimy mud and water. I quickly extracted myself and sought higher ground to shoot the house. It's been abandoned for several years and the elements have really taken their toll. A medium sized tree has grown up in the back doorway. Had I been any heavier I wouldn't have been able to squeeze through. Much of the floor has given way so I couldn't make it to the stairs. The basement has about 8 feet of standing and stagnant water in it. Luckily I wasn't there for mosquito and gnat season. Every place I stepped inside, my foot went though the floor and twice I almost ended up in the basement. So I had to balance on floor joists and be very careful. Buildings out back seem to indicate a cattle or milking operation at some point but nothing is stirring now.

( Lots more to see )
Enjoy,

Some photos I took, wandering around.

I think it's interesting to see how what was once white, clean Bauhaus architecture is now a decaying, crumbling grey mass. ( <img src= ) |
