Techniques test for comic | Technikai teszt képregényhez
Sorry for the lack of updates this week; I was moving back to Hungary. Now I'm back but I still have an amount of paperwork to finish; unfortunately, it seems like everyone's already on holiday (the semester ends earlier in Hungary than in Austria) and I can't get anything done because I simply can't reach people. There is a lack of photos because I've just installed Ubuntu Linux (maybe not the best thing to do while moving :D ) which is absolutely great, but I haven't set up Photoshop for it yet. (I've used Photoshop under Linux; contrary to popular belief, it's perfectly possible, but that was a couple of versions ago.)
Ubuntu is super great, everything works out of the box, and Automatix is a very useful tool too (be sure to check it out when you're installing stuff). I'm switching to Linux entirely because I'm completely unwilling to switch to Windows Vista. You should all consider it. The latest version of Ubuntu installs much easier than Windows XP (I haven't tried Vista), so everyone who says Linux is not "ready for the desktop" should consider that maybe Windows XP is not ready for the desktop either!
This is a techniques test I did a couple of weeks ago for a comic I've just started drawing yesterday. I needed something new because my usual techniques are heavily dependent on color and this comic is going to be grayscale. More details will follow, IY"H... well, only if you're interested ;]
Some of the overlays are from folk art I got off Google Images, but the comic itself will use my own overlays.

Elnézést kérek a frissítések hiányáért ezen a héten, visszaköltöztem Magyarországra, de még mindig el kell intéznem egy csomó mindent... sajnos ez elég erősen lehetetlen, mert úgy tűnik, mindenki elment nyaralni, és senkit sem tudok utolérni. Magyarországon előbb ér véget a szemeszter, mint Ausztriában... *sóhaj* Valamint fényképek még azért sincsenek, mert Linuxot telepítettem a gépemre (azt hiszem, talán nem költözködés közben kellene) és még a Photoshopot nem raktam föl. (Korábban már használtam Linux alatt, a közhiedelemmel szemben tökéletesen lehetséges, de az több verzióval korábban volt...)
Az Ubuntu nagyon jó, eddig minden helyből működött (működik), pedig van egy-két obskúrus hardverelemem. Ha kipróbáljátok, nézzétek meg az Automatixot is, nagyon hasznos. Amúgy ezt mindenkinek ajánlom, én most teljesen átállok Linuxra, mert semmi kedvem Windows Vistát használni... Az Ubuntu legújabb változata könnyebben felment, mint bármilyen XP, úgyhogy ha valaki azt meri állítani, hogy a Linux nem desktop-ready, az gondolkozzon el erősen, mert ilyen erővel a Windows XP sem. (Vistát még nem telepítettem, nem is vágyom rá különösebben :D )
Ezt néhány hete rajzoltam, tesztként egy képregényhez, aminek tegnap álltam neki. Általában színesben szoktam rajzolni, de ez nem lesz színes, úgyhogy variálnom kellett egy kicsit, hogy ki is nézzen valahogy. IJ"H lesz még erről több infó később is... na persze csak ha érdekel benneteket ;]
Egyes overlayek a Google képkeresőjéből szedett népművészeti motívumok, de a kész képregényen saját overlayek lesznek.

I know I'm normally not posting on weekends, but on Friday I couldn't upload my update because I was busy moving. So here you have it now... This is an anti-fascist poster I find very amusing. It looks blurry because there is some kind of motion blur effect on Shongoku himself.
Tudom, hogy hétvégeken nem szokott lenni frissítés, de pénteken nem tudtam feltölteni az aktuális képet, mert erősen költözködtem. Úgyhogy itt van most. Ez egy antifasiszta plakát, szerintem nagyon szórakoztató (ha ez a helyes kifejezés). Azért ilyen maszatos (legalábbis részben ;] ), mert valami motion blur effekt volt Songokun.

Something used to be here | Valami volt itt
Taken in Mauthausen. (I even know what used to be there... you can probably guess.) My desktop computer's Windows install decided to die on me, so something is distinctly off with this image, but I can't fix it. Highly unprofessional. I'm annoyed. But I need to submit a scholarship application today, and that has priority.
I feel exhausted and uninspired. I had taken many photos recently (paraleipsis has spent three days here in Vienna and we ran around in circles and took photos of stuff) which was great, but now I'm tired, and I can't edit the pics because everything keeps on crashing...
Let the semester end, and let me format my hard drive and install Ubuntu... I needed the HDD space so I got rid of the Linux install some time ago, but now I have a new hard drive so I can put it back. I think I'm going to get rid of Windows forever, I definitely don't want to upgrade to Vista. Photoshop runs fine on Linux (I used to do that for quite some time, though that was an earlier version). But Civ4... will I need an OS just to run Civ4?

Mauthausenben fényképeztem. (Azt is tudom, hogy mi volt ott, de szerintem ki tudjátok találni.) Az asztali gépem Windowsa úgy döntött, hogy meghal nekem; tudom, hogy valami nincs rendben ezzel a képpel, de nem tudom megjavítani. Nagyon nem professzionális, és zavar ;] de most le kell adnom egy ösztöndíjpályázatot, és az mégiscsak fontosabb.
Fáradt és ihletetlen vagyok, vagy mi a szösz. Egy csomót fényképeztem mostanában (paraleipsis meglátogatott itt Bécsben és három napig fel-alá rohangáltunk a városban, mint az őrültek, és agyonra fényképeztük magunkat, ami nagyon jóó volt, csak most hullafáradt vagyok és folyamatosan megpurnyad a Windows, úgyhogy nem tudom összeszerkeszteni a képeket....
Legyen már vége a szemeszternek, és akkor format és Ubuntu, de jó lesz. Az előző linuxom az a "kevés a hely a winchesteren" szindrómának esett áldozatul, de most van egy új nagyobb. Úgyhogy Linux lesz, Windows pedig valószínűleg nem is lesz egyáltalán, Vistára nem akarok frissíteni. A Photoshop elfut Linux alatt (használtam úgy egy jó darabig, igaz, egy korábbi verziót), de a Civ4... váá, nem akarok csak a Civ4 miatt egy külön operációs rendszert.

One's path through life and all that | Az ember életútja vagy miaszösz
Vienna's Döbling district is a twin district of Setagaya in Tokyo, who have donated a Japanese garden to the Austrians, which is I suppose kind of n33t. This was taken there. The signs inform the visitor that the path winding through the park symbolizes one's way through life and eventually to paradise. Well. Sure. I know the photo's could be considered kind of kitschy and I don't normally like such color manipulations, but the park is also kind of kitschy... it feels like they wanted to cram all the characteristic Japanese stuff in (I've never been to Japan, though). Still, it's worth a visit - note that it's closed in winter, and regardless of what the official website says, it was still closed in March when I came here.
Bécs Döbling kerülete Tokió egyik külvárosának, Setagayának a testvérvárosa, akik ezen felbuzdulva adományoztak a kedves bécsi lakosoknak egy parkot, ami azt hiszem, dzsír dolog. Ezt ott fényképeztem. A táblák tanúsága szerint a parkon végigvezető ösvény az ember életútját szimbolizálja a Paradicsom felé, hát, ööö lehet. Tudom, hogy a kép kicsit giccses, hogy belenyúltam a színekbe, és ilyet általában nem szoktam csinálni, de a park is kicsit giccses... valahogy olyan érzés, mintha mindent bele akartak zsúfolni, ami tipikusan japánkertes (mondjuk sosem voltam Japánban). De azért érdemes megnézni. Vigyázat, télen zárva van, és bármit is mond a hivatalos weblap, amikor megérkeztem márciusban, még bőven nem nyitották ki.

Dear everyone,
I'm sorry there is no update today; I cut my right foot accidentally (I bumped into a sharp metallic plate) and I spent the afternoon trying to figure out how to keep the wound from ripping open when walking. I did manage to, but it's still hard to move around, so I have to say goodbye to my big photo plan...
The upside is that tomorrow I'll have plenty of time editing my previously made photos, because I won't be able to do anything other than sit on my bed. I'm having trouble just going down to the canteen to eat :[ And I have a conference presentation on Friday I absolutely cannot cancel, I guess I'll have to call a taxi *SIGH*

elnézést kérek, hogy ma nincs frissítés; véletlenül elvágtam a jobb lábamat (nekimentem egy éles fémlemeznek) és azzal töltöttem a délutánt, hogy kitaláljam, hogy mozogjak, hogy ne szakadjon fel minden lépésnél újra a seb. Végül sikerült, de még mindig nehezen mozgok, úgyhogy a nagy fényképes terveimnek búcsút mondhatok...
A pozitívum, hogy holnap bőven lesz időm a meglévő képeimet összeszerkeszteni, mert nem igazán tudok a fetrengésen kívül mást csinálni. Még az ebédlőbe lemenni is nehéz (pedig azt muszáj lesz). És holnapután konferenciaelőadásom lesz, amit nem mondhatok le, úgyhogy attól tartok, muszáj lesz taxit hívnom... |

OK, the big secret is revealed. The amazing picturesque location I showed you two days ago is actually the quarry of the Mauthausen concentration camp, where thousands of inmates worked themselves into death.... quite literally. The Nazis also sometimes pushed people off the top. Here is more info.

Elárulom a nagy titkot. A tegnapelőtti képen látható csodaszép táj valójában a mauthauseni koncentrációs tábor kőfejtője, ahol rabok ezrei dolgozták magukat halálra, szó szerint. A nácik időnként ledobtak embereket a tetejéről. Itt lehet olvasni többet (angolul) meg vannak képek is.
A természet előbb-utóbb tényleg mindenen felülkerekedik.

ONOZ!!!1!1
This is my entry in the impromptu "Librarything is down" bookpile contest that's been announced on the LT blog while the admins were (are) busy fixing the servers. I am HOPELESSLY ADDICTED to Librarything.
I originally wanted to have a classic horizontal bookpile with the spines showing, but the glass didn't seem strong enough and I didn't dare heap a pile of books on it. It was hard enough getting the monitor to rotate into the desired position (it weighs half my own weight by a quick estimate). I think I'm nuts. I also think I should be doing schoolwork.
Sorry I'm flooding you with pics today (for those who haven't friended the journal yet: the other one was a friends only feature). Let me know if it causes a problem and I'll LJ-cut.
Since there were only two guesses on yesterday's question, I'm keeping it open until tomorrow.

Ez a képem a "Nem megy a Librarything szerver" fotópályázatra, amit most hirdettek meg a LT blogon, mert ööö, hát mert nem megy a Librarything szerver és addig is csinálni kell valamit. REMÉNYTELENÜL FÜGGŐ VAGYOK. Librarythinget akaroooook!!
Eredetileg a hagyományos vízszintes kupacot akartam, látható gerincekkel, de rájöttem, hogy nem fogja elbírni az üveg, úgyhogy végül is inkább mégse. Épp elég nehéz volt beforgatni a monitort, főleg hogy kb. fele annyit nyom, mint én. Azt hiszem, megzakkantam. Azt is hiszem, hogy az egyetemi cuccaimmal kellene foglalkoznom az ilyenek helyett.
Ezer bocs, hogy kifloodollak ma benneteket képekkel (a másik friends-only volt, ha valaki esetleg nem látja, loginoljon be). Ha valakit zavar, szóljon és megy az LJ-cut.
Miután még csak ketten tippeltek a tegnapi kérdésre, holnapig meghosszabbítom.

Egy fazon épített egy minden-álló hordozható fényképezőgépet, és a macskájára szerelte. Ez még a mindenhol jelen lévő technológia korában sem egyszerű, forrasztani is kellett és miegyéb. Anime Mary | Anime Mária
Today is a Catholic holiday in Austria; I confess I would've completely missed it were it not for the fact that when I opened the window, I heard a hundred or so Austrians singing and marching down the street behind their priests. It is not really celebrated in Hungary outside the Catholic Church. Surprisingly, this holiday is also a national holiday... it seems to me there are many more national holidays in Austria than in Hungary. Or maybe they all happen during the summer semester. And these occasions all seem to have a Catholic theme... in Hungary, most national holidays other than the usual European ones like Easter or Christmas are political, celebrating the statehood, various revolutions, etc.
We're still near Wertheimsteinpark, this statue stands in one of the streets branching into it, next to the Maimonides Center (which is a Jewish institution). I think it's quite odd for a Christian-themed statue to be situated next to a Jewish building, but I guess the statue must have been there first.
I chose this title because I think the statue has an anime feel to it. betonabrosz thinks it doesn't, though.

Ma katolikus ünnep van Ausztriában, és bevallom, lemaradtam volna róla, ha nem épp akkor megy el egy körmenet az ablak alatt, amikor kinyitom szellőztetni. Meglepő módon egyben nemzeti ünnep is... szerintem Ausztriában sokkal több nemzeti ünnep van, mint Magyarországon, de az is lehet, hogy csak mind a tavaszi szemeszterre esnek. És általában a katolikus ünnepek vannak kijelölve államinak, nem mindenféle forradalmak meg államalapítás, mint Magyarországon.
Még mindig a Wertheimsteinpark környékén vagyunk, ez a szobor az egyik betorkolló utcában áll, és ami fura, hogy a Maimonides Center mellett, ami egy zsidó intézmény. Persze biztos a szobor volt ott előbb. Szerintem kimondottan anime jellegű Szűz Mária, de betonabrosz szerint meg nem.
Katolikus olvasóimnak kellemes ünnepet kívánok!

I pwn even when I'm behind bars | Rács mögött is pwnolok
There is an aviary next to Wertheimsteinpark; I've found some friendly and photogenic birds there. I convinced them in Hungarian to come closer so as to let me take photos. Austrian passers-by must have thought I was quite mad, but I succeeded ;] ...well, maybe I would have succeeded even without talking to the birds, but it felt right.
A Wertheimsteinpark mellett van egy röptető, barátságos és fotogén madarakkal. Meggyőztem őket ékes magyar nyelven, hogy jöjjenek közelebb, hogy lefényképezhessem őket. Az arra járó osztrákok nagy valószínűséggel teljesen bolondnak néztek, de sikerrel jártam ;] (Persze simán lehet, hogy anélkül is odajöttek volna, hogy a lelkükre beszélek, de jólesett.)
